User-centered development in IoT — New PhD candidate at IOTAP

Malmö University’s focus on society was one of the reasons why Brian Katumba applied for a PhD at IOTAP. Starting in May, Katumba will focus on adapting user-centered development methods to IoT product development.

Brian, what is your research interest?

I am interested in the holistic view of software and systems engineering research. I am specifically interested in product development methods, product requirements, and how users and other stakeholders can be involved in the different development phases of a product. Academia in collaboration with industrial research and development is something I treasure!

Why is this research important?

With the Internet […] Continue reading

“To develop information systems is more an art than science”

For more than two decades, Prof. Nancy L Russo has been researching how computing technologies can improve organizational processes and practices. Her expertise is in information system development, an area whose methods are changing with the advent of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies. In the fall of 2015, Nancy Russo will team up with IOTAP.

Russo’s field of interest is Information Systems, which is about using information and computing technologies to improve the processes and practices of any organization. The distinction between individual and organizational use of technology, however, is nowadays less than clear given that we bring individual technologies […] Continue reading

Post-doc with interest in smart grids and artificial intelligence

IoT research that focuses on people brought Radu-Casian Mihailescu to Malmö. In April, he joined IOTAP as post-doc in computer science. His main research interest is at the intersection of artificial intelligence and so-called smart grids.

Radu, why is there such a strong interest in IoT?

There is no doubt in my mind that the proliferation of intelligent objects in our surrounding environment will bring about fundamental changes to society. This poses a wide variety of challenges, but also opportunities for innovation.

First, I see huge opportunities for people and businesses to make more timely and better informed decisions based on a […] Continue reading
