Possible to map data from smart door locks

More and more people use smart door locks to control access to their house or apartment. These door locks are often wirelessly connected to the Internet, which poses several security and privacy challenges.

A recent study on a door lock readily available on the market shows that the encryption of data sent between the door lock and the central router could be improved. With the current encryption, it is possible for a technically skilled person to find out what kind of data is communicated by the lock. This means that you can find out when a person locks or unlocks the door, and also make qualified guesses on how many people live there.

The study was conducted by Robin Gustafsson and Linus Janstad, computer science students at Malmö University, who conclude that the encryption of data from smart door locks could be improved. But, they add that there is a trade-off between security and usability.
