Rubbinput: An Interaction Technique for Wet Environments Utilizing Squeak Sounds Caused by Finger-Rubbing

Rubbinput, a user interface for wet environments, utilizes the squeaky sounds made when rubbing a smooth, wet surface with fingers. Rubbinput analyzes squeaks, interpreting “duration time,” “reciprocating motions,” and “number of rubbing fingers,” converting them to user interface events. Harmonic structures of squeak caused by each finger are utilized to detect events with low latency. In this paper, we describe Rubbinput use cases and analyze user interface detection processes and performance. Specific applications and uses accompanied by user evaluations, are also described.

An Investigation of Vulnerabilities in Smart Connected Cameras

The Internet of Things is enabling innovative services promising added convenience and value in various domains such as the smart home. Increasingly, households, office environments and cities, are being fitted with smart camera systems aimed to enhance the security of citizens. At the same time, several systems being deployed suffer from weak security implementations. Recognizing this, and to understand the extent of this situation, in this study we perform a wide-scale vulnerability assessment using the Shodan search engine and the Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures database. This is done to detect smart connected cameras exposed on the Internet alongside their sensitive, potentially private, data being broadcasted. Further- more, we discuss whether the discovered data can be used to compromise the safety and privacy of individuals. The results indicate that a significant number of smart cameras are indeed prone to diverse security and privacy vulnerabilities.
Enabling the Smart Home Through a Semantic-Based Context-Aware System

This paper describes CasAware, a context-aware system allowing domestic distributed devices to interoperate and collaborate with each other exploiting the Internet of Things. CasAware’s main purpose is to improve inhabitants’ level of comfort and well-being, enforcing their safety, while optimizing time and energy consumption of appliances. The envisioned system leverages combined exploitation of various technologies ranging from Cloud Computing to Semantic Web technologies. In particular, it takes advantage of ontological modelling techniques to formalize the knowledge of different domestic domains (house, appliances, sensors and the pieces of information they share) and exploit semantic reasoning techniques to infer new insights from already known facts. Although the potential of semantic approach has been investigated in many recent researches, various challenges have to be faced in order to make it feasible on a large scale. These challenges are analyzed through three different motivating scenarios, which also contribute to elicit the requirements of the CasAware system.

Pervasive computing is moving beyond the personal devices to everyday ‘things’ with embedded technology getting smaller and more powerful than ever before. This ubiquitous computing paradigm, commonly also referred to as the Internet of Things (IoT), will provide pervasive access to resources and services, facilitating smart living at homes, offices, cars, buses, schools, and other places. The connected smart things are often intended to improve safety and security, energy efficiency, work productivity, etc., for users in their living spaces, but they also often aim at supporting a sustainable lifestyle by the use of, for instance, pervasive applications and systems intended to promote health, nutrition, comfort, social relationships, and entertainment.
From both industrial and academic stand points, a strong interest has evolved in research on pervasive applications and systems intended for smart living. This, in combination with crucial topics, such as, middleware methodologies, privacy and security technologies, wearables and user interaction, software architectures, data processing and analytics, context-aware service-provisioning, etc., frame the scope of the intended workshop.
The workshop aims to bring together researchers, industry practitioners, and the community interested in pervasive computing for smart living spaces. Original papers addressing both theoretical and practical aspects of pervasive smart living are welcome. Topics include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Novel applications, tools and devices
- Sensor technologies and systems
- Middleware methodologies
- Software architectures and systems
- Wearables and user interaction
- Context-aware service provisioning
- Data processing and analytics
- Distributed approaches for mobile context data sharing
- Data and situation visualization
- Social network applications and analysis
- Risk evaluation and threat agent modelling
- Security, trust, and privacy
- Multi-device collaboration involving wearable devices, smartphones, etc.
- Pervasive content sharing and media distribution
- Application and service interoperability issues
Authors are invited to submit regular six-page papers for presentation at the workshop, describing original, previously unpublished work, which is not currently under review by another workshop, conference, or journal. Regular papers should present novel perspectives within the general scope of the workshop.
All accepted papers will be included in the PerCom proceedings and published by the IEEE.
Papers may be no more than 6 pages in length. Papers in excess of page limits shall not be considered for review or publication. All papers must be typeset in double-column IEEE format using 10pt fonts on US letter paper, with all fonts embedded. The IEEE LaTeX and Microsoft Word templates, as well as related information, can be found at the IEEE Computer Society website. Submissions must be made via EDAS.
It is a requirement that all authors listed in the submitted paper are also listed in EDAS. The author section of EDAS will be locked after the workshop submission deadline to ensure that conflict-of-interest can be properly enforced during review. If the list of authors differs between the paper and EDAS, the paper may not be reviewed. The authors of accepted papers must guarantee that their paper will be presented at the workshop. At least one author of each accepted paper must be registered at full rate for that paper to appear in the proceedings and to be scheduled for presentation.
Each accepted paper will require a full PERCOM conference registration (no registration is available for workshops only).
