Emergent Configurations for IoT Systems – ECOS+

Designing for users to manage situations where devices connect to each other.

The core aim of the ECOS+ project is to help users get the most out of the Internet of Things (IoT). In our previous project, ECOS, we investigated and preliminary validated the concept of Emergent Configurations (ECs) as a way to engineer IoT systems. An EC involves several connected and possibly intelligent objects and devices, including their functionalities, services, and applications, combining into temporary configurations to achieve a user goal. Due to the nature of the IoT, it is unfeasible to foresee all potential situations also because very often they change unpredictably. Consequently, we aim at designing systems and interactions to enable the dynamic formation and adaptation of ECs.

Building upon ECOS results, ECOS+ will continue the investigations on system/software architectures, information models, support methods, and self-adaptation, as well as on interaction design principles in order to support users in understanding, appropriating and effectively using ECs. Initially, the project will focus on two main cases. One is in the Industry 4.0 domain and includes predictive maintenance. The second case will be in the domain of Smart Living and Smart Health including a prototyping platform in AWS with a number of IoT devices according to the EC concept.
